Approximately 191 schools have written to Kenya Private Schools Association (KPSA) notifying the organization that they will not be reopened after bearing the economic effects of the Covid-19 pandemic.

KPSA CEO Peter Ndoro said that some of the school owners had ventured into other businesses after schools had closed down to shield themselves from the financial effects of Covid-19.

Private schools have stated that they are not in a position to comply with the guidelines of the Ministry of Health and Education on the reopening of schools.

However, Ndoro is optimistic that the government will respond to their appeals to be included in the economic stimulus package that will give the schools a lifeline.

Ndoro added that KPSA is working with the schools to ensure that the students are transferred to different institutions.

“Majority of the schools have been able to communicate with other schools so that they have a place to go when the schools finally reopen. It’s not like the schools have all closed and the learners have just been left on their own, there’s a mechanism that we’ve put in place to ensure that these learners don’t get lost,” he said.
