Egerton University is planning to lay off more than 400 staff members as it struggles with financial crisis worsened by the novel Corona virus.
In a report by the University, it has proposed the retrenchment is to ease the payroll burden and the decision has been approved by the university council.
“This will reduce the payroll cost by sh 38.7 million per month,” part of the report reads. The annual payroll cost for Egerton University is estimated at sh 464.4 million
The VC, Prof Rose Mwoya said last month the university had requested the government to consider providing sh 589.7 million to finance the exercise.
According to the university government funding has been reducing since 2015.
