Hannah Wanjiku, an 85-year-old sick widow, is battling to access her bank account at one of the local banks that is said to hold her Ksh18 million.

According to court records, the controversy over the land of Wanjiku started in June 2005 when she was approached by one Francis Mwaura Njinu who attempted to purchase the Karen land for Ksh16.5 million.

Njinu was reportedly expected to pay KSh 1.6 million in advance, with the remainder distributed over a span of 90 days. However, he refused to comply with the negotiated timetable and reportedly went on to subdivide the land into parcels and sold it to a third party purchaser.

“I was surprised to learn that Njinu had advertised my land in a newspaper looking for buyers, yet he had not finished paying the balance as per the sale agreement,” the widow stated.

Since she wanted the money to build her retirement home, Wanjiku said she had found another buyer, Muthoki Brothers Company Ltd, in July 2006, who had agreed to purchase her land at a cost of Sh28 million and the money she had deposited in her NBK account.

She withdrew Sh10 million and left the balance of Sh18 million, which has been on her account since 2007.
