In a letter dated 31 August to all Vice Chancellors, the Education Cabinet Secretary allowed the final year medical students to go back to school and sit for their final exams.

Responding to the earlier request by Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentist councils, Magoha said the move was obliged by the desire to increase the number of medical practitioners required to deal with the Corona virus pandemic.

The students were permitted to undertake the physical learning but under strict adherence to COVID-19 guidelines.

He said the institutions will undergo physical inspections of facilities to ascertain the level of readiness before learning can embark.

“Consideration has been given to the request for face-to-face learning and assessment of medical students. This is further informed by physical inspection of facilities to ascertain the level of preparedness for the resumption of face-to-face learning,” part of the letter read.

Learners will be required to wear the necessary PPEs. Also the number of students per rotation must be limited to allow social distancing norms.

The letter came barely days after KMPDC wrote to deans of school of medicine and dentistry to allow final year students to undertake their exams.
