On the morning of Thursday, January 28, 2021, the Garissa County Assembly building was engulfed in an enormous fire.

No casualty has been reported. Local authorities and the Kenya Redcross rushed to the scene and worked together to put out the fire.

An official from the Garissa County Assembly stated that the fire may have been caused by a faulty electrical wire.

He added that the fire started at around 8:20 am and burned down 48 offices within the building.

Firefighters responded to the scene 50 minutes after the fire broke out.

“As at now, we can not be able to ascertain the real course of the fire, and the cost of the damage. As at around now, I can say, about 40 per cent of the building is gone,” the county assembly clerk stated.

Mohammed Ali, Minority County Assembly Minority Leader, also stated that the county assembly chamber had been completely destroyed by the flames.
