Records have been destroyed in a fire outbreak that has ravaged Uganda’s main building of Makerere University today.
According to officers in the region, the fire which broke out at the early hours of Sunday 20 September is believed to have began from the roof spreading downwards to the floors.
The buildings that were mainly affected were the records and finance departments. The Ugandan police have launched an investigation to unveil the cause of the fire.
“A lot of property has been destroyed. Investigations are ongoing to ascertain the exact cause of the fire,” read a police statement.
The university’s Vice Chancellor Prof Barnabas Nawangwe said the restoration of the building to its historic state will commence and will be in the shortest time possible.
“It is a very dark morning for Makerere University. Our iconic main administration building caught fire and the destruction is unbelievable,” read part of his tweet.
