The phase one of the six storey building in Gikomba Market has been completed and is currently undergoing some finishing touches. This news is exciting to the Gikomba traders who have been suffering from fire outbreaks over the recent years.

The phase one which was allocated a budget of Sh493 million was started out back in October 2018 and will involve six floors each with its own distinct function. The building should be all finished come 30th October.

The ground floor will host all fish traders, second floor to host 81 different traders, the third floor will host sub-tenants and the fourth floor will host M-pesa agents and hawkers.

The fifth floor and sixth floor will house temporary Gikomba traders as they await the completion of the second phase of the block to be built. The second phase of the block is said that it will be twice the size of the current phase one block.

The county Commissioner of Nairobi while on a visit in the area was quoted saying, “These stalls should only be allocated to those who have been trading in this market. We do not want to hear that the committee has brought names of outsiders and their relatives,”
