Google is honouring Kenyan female activist Mekatalili Wa Menza with a doodle on its homepage.

A google doodle is a temporary modification of a logo on the tech giant’s homepages intended to celebrate events, notable historical figures among many others.

Mekatalili was regarded as a freedom fighter that led the Giriama people in a rebellion against the British Colonial rule in the early 90’s.

It is said she traveled from one area to the other spreading opposition message while performing the ecstatic native dance of Kifudu to draw large crowds and then unleashing her powerful oratory skills.

On it’s twitter page, google Africa wrote;

” We are celebrating Mekatilili Wa Menza known for inspiring the Giriama people to resist colonial rule, one of Kenya’s first freedom fighters, circa 1900. Here she’s performing ‘Kifudu’ to draw the crowds ‘shangwe‘,” read the tweet.

The doodle is said to have been by Nairobi-based guest artist Wanjira Kinyua. Mekatilili becomes among Kenyans who have been featured by google including Dr Margaret Ogola an author and doctor, Wangari Mathai, Nobel prize winner.
