On Friday, January 1, 2021,  Liwatoni residents in Mombasa County were in excitement after the government officially opened the Ksh1.9 billion footbridge to the public.

Mbarak Abdalla, one of the residents who used the bridge during its unveiling, expressed his delight at the milestone, noting that it could significantly reduce the travelling time between the channels, and further suggested that the state should plan to build a roof over the bridge to protect locals from the sun and the rain.

“We are so excited over the opening of this bridge today. We would like to have shades across the bridge to prevent us from the sun and the rain.

“The bridge was constructed at an appropriate time because I think we shall protect ourselves from contracting the Covid-19 virus. The spread was fastest at the Linkoni Ferry,” stated the Liwatoni resident.

President Uhuru Kenyatta unveiled the Liwatoni Floating Bridge in early December 2020.
