The government has proposed new traffic fines which will see pedestrians and motorists together part with sh 3 billion annually, with the pilot project already underway.

The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure unveiled plan to install intelligent video surveillance cameras in 300 junctions in Nairobi.

The project is said to cost the government 30 billion shillings. Revenue collected annually will be used to maintain and operate the gadgets.

The fines proposed include:

  1. speed violation- (ksh 500-10,000)
  2. Driving through pedestrian or pavements- (sh 5,000)
  3. Reversing in un-designated areas-(sh 3,000)
  4. Bypassing the red traffic light- (sh3,000)

Other traffic offences whose fines have not been mentioned include: occupying yellow line, driving on the wrong lane, parking violations and illegal turnings.

Pedestrians will be fined for crossing roads through traffic and areas without zebra crossing.

The Cameras are said to automatically record behaviors of motorist capture the drivers picture and note the place of offence committed, date and time.

Offence details are to be relayed to Kenya Urban Roads Authority who will forward them to the suspected motorists.
