The Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops expressed its concerns about a number of proposals included in the BBI report.

According to a press release issued on Thursday, 12 November, following a meeting at the Subukia Village of Mary Shrine, the clergy suggested that the BBI report be revised to fix the excesses they noted.

Expanded Executive

The Bishops stated that the report proposed the establishment of a position of the Prime Minister and two Deputy Prime Ministers to represent the face of Kenya.

They were concerned that if the President was allowed to appoint the Prime Minister and two deputies, it would concentrate more power around the Head of State, creating the same problem the plan was supposed to solve.

Bloated Parliament

The Bishops noted that the expansion of the Senate to 94 members and the National Assembly to 363 would add to the already heavy burden on taxpayers.

Politicised IEBC

The clergy expressed concern that it would be risky for political parties to appoint IEBC members because it would politicize and undermine the independence of the electoral commission.

Formation of Kenya National Police Council

Catholic bishops opposed the establishment of a Kenya Police Council led by the Cabinet Secretary of the Interior Ministry, which could turn the country into a police state.
