Kenya Power and Lighting Company has said it’s seeking Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority’s approval to increase unit tariffs.
The lighting company claimed it was in communication with the EPRA to increase electricity bill per unit by 20%.
While speaking to NTV, Managing Director Bernard Ngugi said the company was sailing under huge debts that can hamper its operations.
“We have outstanding debts that we need to pay, we also took huge loans. The much we are collecting which require us to do certain things demand quite a lot. We are required to do something very strategic,” he said
Bernard Ngugi further said the increment will cater for cost of power generation.
“When you look at what we pay, we pay almost 70% of what we collect to the power generators. Perhaps we are left with about 30% to maintain our lines and other things leaving us with negative every month,” he added.
This comes after 5 board of directors members recently resigned after the company’s profits declined by 92%.
