Staff and students at Ngala Memorial girls secondary school in Watamu, Kilifi county, are counting losses after fire gutted down a dormitory at the school on Tuesday night.

Several students were also admitted in hospital within Malindi, for treatment against shock they suffered during the incident, which occurred as they attended evening studies.

The fire reportedly started at around 8:30pm and a teacher at the school said it’s cause was yet to be established.

Nothing was salvaged from the inferno, and among property destroyed was student beddings and their other personal belongings.

Area member of parliament Gideon Mung’aro visited the school and pledged to reconstruct the dormitory through the Constituency Develeopment Fund (CDF).

The Kenya Red cross promised to donate blankets and mattresses, as parents and the school management board, who held a crisis meeting on Wednesday, raised kshs. 30,000 to buy basic items for the 67 girls who were affected.

The school administration said it would accommodate the affected students in other dormitories as it sought an alternative, and that the school would not be closed.

Police have launched investigations to determine the cause of the fire, and they said they would not rule out arson.
