A video emerged showing school girls being fumigated as they reported back to school on Monday 12 October has caused uproar among Kenyans.
The video shows school girls dressed in uniform being sprayed using a Knapsack Sprayer pump majorly used to control parasites and diseases in animals.
They were sprayed with the chemical meant to sanitise them as the school sought to adhere to Covid-19 containment measures put in place by the Ministry of Health as schools reopen.K
Kenyans reacted to the video by calling out the school for exposing the girls to inhuman treatment in the name of sanitising them.
Most of them termed the incident wrong to the extreme. What was being doing was completely useless and of no impact, only spreads fear and stigma.
Some questioned the period of it’s lasting as it was an infringement of the children’s rights. They claimed classes are the ones ought to be fumigated and not students.
However some applauded the school for taking the precaution despite it being done in a wrong way since students who had ailments such as allergies were being exposed to health complications.
This comes on the backdrop of an announcement by Education Cabinet Secretary Professor George Magoha directing Grade 4, Class 8 and Four 4 students to report back to school.
