The mass reopening of schools has been suspended after the Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe declined to approve the resumption of studies of all other students stating that only form four, grade eight and grade four students will continue with their studies.

This suspension comes shortly after the Education Cabinet Secretary, George Magoha was expected to release a date for the mass reopening of schools after candidates and grade four students resumed learning on October 12.

Education CAS Zack Kinuthia stated that educational institutions would not be closed again and that national examinations would continue as expected.

“Schools will not be closed based on the cases in Mombasa. If a school is found to be a threat, we will close the school or the student is isolated and learning will continue,” Zack said.

In compliance with the Directive of the Ministry of Education, The Kenya Association of International Schools (KAIS) already postponed mass reopening for their students.

“The ministry has postponed further reopening of other levels for in-person learning as they conduct an audit of this initial phase and iron out a decision model for re-opening schools as needed,” stated Jane Mwangi, (KAIS) Head of Secretariat.
