On Thursday, 15 October, Nairobi Doctors went on strike for the second time in months, due to salary delays by the Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS).

Thuranira Kaugiria, Nairobi branch Secretary of the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU), revealed that the NMS violated the return-to – work formula signed with the medical officers on 26 August 2020.

The doctors also blamed the NMS for failing to provide them with adequate medical insurance through the National Health Insurance Fund.

NMS Deputy Director-General Kang’ethe Thuku in response clarified that they had some payroll problems and were working on them quickly.

He assured the doctors that NMS had already negotiated and finalized a comprehensive NHIF cover for all its staff.

However, Thuku noted that the guidance of the head of the public service was not to proceed with the cover, as the county government had already engaged AAR to provide the same.
