Thousands of Goma city residents in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) are counting losses while displaced following the eruption of Mount Nyiragongo last night.

The sad incident occured on Saturday, May 22. The active Volcano mountain spit fountains of high lav from the into the night sky forming a thick orange cloud.

According to local and international news outlets, the DRC government launched an evacuation plan for the eastern city of Goma which has a population of two million people.

Following the incident, thousands of panic-stricken residents carrying mattresses and other belongings fled the city on foot with many heading towards Rwanda.

More than 3,500 Congolese have already crossed the border to Rwanda, this is according to the country’s Ministry in Charge of Emergency Management.

The ministry said those affected will be lodged in schools and places of worship. Nyiragongo’s volcano last erupted in 2002 killing 250 people and left more than 120,000 others homeless.
