New reports indicate scientists have discovered a new deadlier COVID-19 variant in Tanzania, raising an alarm.
The mutant variant (temporarily named A.VOI.V2) was found in travellers on their way to Angola.
It could be a blow in the fight against the highly contagious disease considering it reduces immunity acquired from vaccination and natural infection.
“We decided to report this as a new variant of interest (VOI), given the constellation of mutations with known or suspected biological significance, specifically resistance to neutralising antibodies and potentially increased transmissibility,” read a report to the World Health Organisation (WHO).
According to Moses Masika, a virologist at the University of Nairobi (UoN), the new variant could already be in the country. Tanzania is Kenya’s immediate neighbour to the south which has a porous border.
However the virologists in Kenya have said they are continuing to study tge pattern of the new variant.
