The government started its plan to demolish over Ksh1 billion worth houses located on a controversial stretch of land in Sagana, Kirinyaga County.

On Friday, September 25th, the local businessmen complained that they woke up to a surprise after the National Youth Service officers began fencing half of the town, claiming that traders had invaded the land belonging to the Kenya Railways Service.

Residents of the area claimed that the government did not issue them with an eviction notice before proceeding with the demolition plan.

They said that they had legally acquired the land and had title deeds and lease documents to prove it.

“Over 100 houses will be demolished, which means that more than 300 families will be affected. Nearly 30 business people legally own land as both residential and business areas,” lamented Warui Kahiga, Chairman of the Traders.

NYS officers could be seen constructing concrete walls to shield government land from traders who most probably will sleep at night in the cold.
