The Senate reopened debate on the Constitution of Kenya (Amendment) Bill on Thursday morning, ahead of the scheduled voting in the afternoon.

According to the order paper, the Bill would proceed to the third reading stage on Thursday afternoon where members would vote on it.

The two Houses of Parliament are set to decide on whether Members of Parliament can amend the Constitution of Kenya (Amendment) Bill, after the heated debate last week.

While MPs appear to agree that the bill cannot be changed by the House, a near-unanimous call by senators to correct ‘typographical and referential errors’ and remove ‘unconstitutional’ clauses could give supporters nightmares.

In the Senate, Speaker Ken Lusaka has gazetted three days of special sittings beginning Tuesday to conclude the consideration of the bill.

Despite the fact that the Constitution states that the bill will go to a referendum whether or not Parliament approves it, revelations of conflicting versions and the desire to amend the document cause major challenges to its supporters.
