A controversial Nyeri businessman who was recently arrested over claims of killing his own son has died.

The late Stephen Wang’ondu was pronounced dead at the Outspan Hospital in Nyeri, where he was receiving medical attention.

The 74-year-old tycoon passed on just days after he was released on a bond of KSh 1 million for the charges he was facing. The suspect was set free by Justice Florence Muchemi on Wednesday, April 28, alongside his four accomplices charged with murder.

In the ruling, the judge asked the accused to surrender their passports and appear for mentioning every 30 days until their case is heard and determined.

Justice Muchemi warned the defendants against intimidating or talking to witnesses in the criminal case lest their bond be cancelled.

The judge said the prosecution did not provide any compelling reasons why the accused should continue being held as they were not considered flight risks.

However, Wang’ondu and his accomplices would be held for three more days after the prosecution asked the court for more time to compile substantial evidence on why they should be held.
