Tom Mboya Statue Near The Kenya National Archives being pulled down

The statue of the legendary Kenyan trade unionist and former Cabinet Minister Tom Mboya, erected near the Kenya National Archives, Moi Avenue, Nairobi, was removed on Sunday, September 13, after more than a year of disrepair.

The transporter who was seen removing the statue revealed that he was called to deliver it to Nairobi National Museum.

“I do not have a lot of details, only that I was instructed to take it to the National Museums of Kenya headquarters,” he explained.

The bronze monument was made by the artist Oshottoe Ondula, barely 50 meters from the spot where Tom Mboya was gunned down in broad daylight by the assassin in 1969.

Over the years, with its water gushing fountains and a moat, the statue has attracted the public but recent negligence has turned the popular statue into an eye-sore.

Steve McAketch, who was in charge of the renovations, revealed that the statue was taken away for a facelift.

“We removed the statue as the place is undergoing renovations temporarily but more details about the renovations will be revealed tomorrow,” he explained.
