Latoya Mghoi Kaka, the widow to former Nakumatt auditor James Karanja, has won a petition against the collapsed company for compensation of Ksh 30 million insurance policy owed to the family.

Daily Nation reported on Monday, 21 December 2020, that High Court Judge Albert Mabeya ruled in favor of the widow’s lawsuit, allowing her to recover the money from the once largest East African company and its owner, Atul Shah.

On 7 May 2015, James Karanja was shot three times in the head and chest. This was allegedly before he was to blow the whistle on illegal activities involving senior officials at Nakumatt.

The auditor had taken out a late auditor insurance policy that would see his family receive Ksh 30 million if he died while working for the company.

The publication announced that on 11 September 2015, Kenindia insurance, a service provider, released funds to Nakumatt to serve as a conveyor belt for money to meet Karanja’s family.
