A former mortuary attendant at the Iten County Referral Hospital, Elgeyo Marakwet County, has been arrested by the police for allegedly swapping bodies at the hospital morgue.
The arrest came just days after the hospital reported that an unidentified man had sneaked into the funeral home section who was later found to be Benson Kagari, a former hospital worker who had been fired on disciplinary matters.
The suspect is said to have sneaked into the hospital to switch identification tags on the dead bodies, which led to a family collecting the wrong body. Police said that the family had lost a male member of the family, but they were shocked to find a female body instead.
According to Issa Kamar, the Health County Executive Committee, it was later discovered that the confusion was caused by Kagari, who exchanged the name tags to sabotage the hospital after being fired.
‘We have enhanced security at the facility and also take this opportunity to report that Benson Kagari is no longer working at Iten Referral Hospital Funeral Home. He is therefore not authorised to transact any business on behalf of the hospital,” Kamar said.
The suspect is being held at the Iten police station as investigations into the matter are ongoing.
