Buildings, including police stations and the National Port Authority, were burned down and violence raged in a variety of locations in Nigeria on Wednesday.

Shops were shuttered and property of unknown value burned down on Thursday, October 22, as Nigeria’s largest city Lagos was locked down under curfew after unrest flared following the shooting of protesters.

Nigeria’s Vice President Yemi Osinbajo sympathized with the victims of the shooting, as well as the policemen and others who lost their lives in a few days of chaos in Africa’s most populous region.

“The pain of these terrible events is palpable in our towns and cities, and some losses are irreplaceable, but we can and will get justice for all of them,” he said in statement.

Nigeria’s army, however, labelled allegations that soldiers opened fire on the protesters as fake news.

Muhammad Maigari Dingyadi, the Police Minister, told the BBC said that the soldiers were ordered not to open fire on the demonstrators.

“I cannot say who is involved in the shooting, definitely not the police. Soldiers have already spoken about this, they are denying their involvement,” said Muhammad.
