Inspector General Hillary Mutyambai, stated that the increased number of road accidents across the country has been due to the failure of drivers to comply with basic road safety requirements.

He said that on the first weekend of October between Friday 2nd and Sunday 4th, 60 people lost their lives in incidents involving over-speeding and drunk driving.

On Friday, October 9, he announced that the National Police Service, would carry out operations on major roads in the country in an effort to reduce road accidents.

“To this end, the National Police Service will undertake nationwide enforcement operations to address factors such as speeding, lane indiscipline, assessment of general compliance with public service vehicle (PSV) licensing requirement, a crackdown on unroadworthy vehicles among other traffic offences,” he stated.

Mutyambai also added that, as of 9 October, the police will perform random drunk driving checks in all major cities.

“We assure the public that measures to prevent the spread of Corona Virus shall be in place when undertaking these activities,” he noted.

The accidents recorded at the beginning of October occurred after President Uhuru Kenyatta lifted the order banning the selling of alcohol to facilitate the reopening of bars.
