Doom for private universities as they are likely to lose thousands of government-sponsored students they enroll a year if a proposal by a state agency is adopted.
The University funding board claims the burden of funding undergraduate students in private universities under the programme is no longer sustainable.
The state agency now wants the government to halt the programme. It is reported since 2016 when the system was introduced the private universities have enrolled 47,578 students with 50% of their student population being government-sponsored.
The programme was introduced after the government reviewed its policy to sponsor all students with entry grade of C+ and above.
