Kenya’s installed steam power capacity now stands at 579MW, ahead of giant economies such as Japan, Russia, China and Germany – according to a study presented to the World Bank by state-owned KenGen.

Kenya is investing more in generation of affordable energy by exploiting the country’s geothermal potential.

Energy Principal Secretary Engineer Joseph Njoroge says focusing on exploitation of green energy sources will ensure the country achieves its target of generating an additional 5,000 megawatts by the year 2017.

Kenya’s most recent geothermal project is the injection of 280 MW to the national grid generated in the Olkaria geothermal fields.

This increased Kenya’s geothermal power to 29 percent of the total energy mix, up from the previous 13 percent.

Eng. Njoroge says Kenya has favorable policy and regulatory frameworks to facilitate in the energy sector.

As the country gears towards achieving the 5,000 MW power capacity by 2017, various geothermal projects have been lined up, including generation of 460MW from Menengai, 200MW from Bogoria-Silai block and 150MW from the Suswa geothermal fields.

Kenya is actively participating in regional and international initiatives to facilitate development of renewable energy that would then be traded leveraging on the several power transmission interconnections with among others Ethiopia, Uganda, Rwanda and Tanzania.
