Kenyan athlete Edwin Mokua, 28, set to participate in next month’s Marathon in Turkey, is nursing serious injuries after an attack by hippos.

Mokua was exercising in Manguu Village near Nyahururu Town when the incident occurred.

He was wounded in his back and shoulder and was taken to Nyahururu Private Hospital for first aid.

His training partner Dennis Kipkosgei revealed that he had realized that Mokua had drifted away during their evening jog when he became concerned.

When he went back to get him, he found that he had been attacked by a number of hippos, leaving him with injuries.

Mokua had travelled from Kisii and was planning to leave for Turkey to take part in the marathon scheduled for the weekend starting on Saturday, October 3rd.

Mokua was later transferred to Nyahururu County & Referral Hospital for special treatment.

Francis Kamau, the athlete’s coach reported that Nyahururu residents had suffered wild animal attacks since Covid 19 pandemic hit the country.

He appealed to the government to open a stadium in the area to help athletes train without attacks from wild animals.
