The World Health Organization gave joy to the whole world after they brought into the limelight a drug called Dexamethasone. It is a steroid used to reduce inflammation in a range of conditions, including certain cancers and it can also raise blood pressure as well as blood sugar in diabetics.
Health Director-General Patrick Amoth spoke about the drug cautioning Kenyans from running to buy the drug over the counter without first finding out about the side effects.
He said that the drug causes Fluid Retention which may in turn lead to a patient gaining weight. “If you’re on insulin or oral medicine for treating diabetes, you will require a higher dose to control your sugar,” he said then warned Kenyans saying, “Any person taking this particular medicine must be wary of these effects”
The drug was discovered by UK government together with the Oxford university and has been known to reduce the mortality rate of patients suffering from Covid 19.
“This is the first treatment to be shown to reduce mortality in patients with COVID-19 requiring oxygen or ventilator support,” said WHO Director-General, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. He termed it as a ‘Lifesaving scientific breakthrough’
