Larry Madowo is perfectly redefining what the term “celebrity” should mean in a contemporary Kenyan society; he is on a mission to demystify the myth that celebrity status should be packaged with scandals, meaningless glorification and zero relevance.
From his humble moments in the Kenyan media as an intern, to gradual rise as a senior news anchor and a host of the popular show on NTV #Thetrend, and later ascent to international limelight, Larry has empirically pippeted-off the notion that you have to either show off your material worth or brew a scandalous unfolding to stay put on the celebrity congruence.
He is among the few names of our generation who have successful worked in the Kenyan media without even a substantial leak of their private life. Kenyan tabloids are still mirroring a microscopic possibility on whom Larry is dating, the car he is driving and his net worth.
To majority of Kenyans, Larry is just Larry; the ever smiling soul from Siaya who graced our screens for prime time news alongside Victoria Rubadiri and had the guts of telling the deputy president William Ruto during a live TV interview with osmotic disregard to “learn to listen to questions and answer what he is asked; not cooking his own and answering”
As some of his peers are busy punishing their liver with expensive liquor and shamelessly posting on social media as an achievement, he is flaunting his academic achievements having graduated with masters of Business and Economics Journalism from the Columbia university, school of journalism.
As some of the so called “celebrities” are making headlines, comparing notes on the women they have preyed on; objectifying, demeaning and shamelessly analysing their tastes and sexual skills , Larry is souring in the skies, being declared the winner of the 2020 Philip Greer scholarship Award for financial writing.
Larry represents East Africa as the youngest BBC reporter and Africa as the the youngest BBC business reporter. Still in his grandiose achievements and glory , Larry carry out himself as if he has achieved nothing – that is humility. We never see him advertising his big cars or luxurious London house or even flamboyant treats in dreamlands. You will either see his photos with friends on the street smiling as usual or in studio donning the headphones.
As a young generation, especially the ones striving to put on the celebrity badge, we have alot to learn from Larry Madowo ; he isn’t perfect, but there is one or two things we can extract from his lifestyle, ambitions and achievements.
