Manchester United will finish in the top-four of the Premier League, earning a berth in the Champions League for next season.

After finishing seventh place in the league last season and missing out on European competition as a whole, Captain Wayne Rooney considers the year a success.

With a new manager in Louis van Gaal and plenty of new faces in the lineup, United recovered from a slow start to secure a spot in Europe, which Rooney says was the club’s main goal.

Speaking to the club’s official website

The main aim was to get back into the Champions League.

It was very important because one year out of the competition was far too much for this club. So that was our main objective, to bring Champions League football back, and we’ve done that.

Now we want to go and win the last game of the season and then next season we really want to push for silverware. We’re establishing a very good squad who I believe can go on and win silverware next year.”

Rooney touched on the slow start to the season, saying Van Gaal’s new system took a bit of time to learn, but believes the team has made great progress adapting to new formations and tactics.
