Liverpool striker Mohamed Salah bagged the African Footballer of the Year title for the second year running on Tuesday, at the Confederation of African Football’s awards ceremony in Dakar.
“This award is very big for me, I love it because I saw it when I was young and I always had a dream to win it one day,” Salah said as he collected his trophy at the ceremony in the Senegalese capital.
“I’m proud to win it twice, I must thank my family and my teammates, and I dedicate this award to my country, Egypt.”
While the 15-vote winning margin for Egypt was unexpected, the success of Salah was anticipated as he continues to score regularly for the English Premier League leaders.
Salah netted 44 goals in all competitions for Liverpool last season — his first with the Anfield club — and has bagged 13 Premier League goals so far this season.
Salah has been African Footballer of the Year the last two years while Mahrez was the winner in 2016. Salah has scored 13 Premier League goals this season to guide Liverpool to top spot.Sane was third in 2016 and runner-up to Salah the last two years.
The 26-year-old is the fourth player to win the award twice consecutively, after Senegal’s El Hadji Diouf, Cameroonian Samuel Eto’o, and Ivory Coast’s Yaya Toure.
Mohamed Salah and his wife, Maggi, married in 2013. Their daughter, Makka, born in 2014 is named in honor of the Islamic holy city of Mecca. Salah is Muslim and often celebrates goals by performing the sujud. Salah is one of the players who upholds both his religion and family.
