Serena Williams ended a three-year title drought and donated her winner’s cheque to victims of the Australian bushfires. “I’ve been playing in Australia for over 20 years and it’s been really hard for me to watch all the news and everything that has been happening in Australia with all the fire and… animals and people that have lost their homes,” she said.

“I decided at the beginning of the tournament… I’d donate all my prize money for a great cause.”
“Oh, it feels good!” Serena Williams told CNN. “It’s been a long time. I think you could see the relief on my face.”

Despite her medical hardships, Serena Williams has hit the court hard after recovering from her traumatic birth. While she didn’t add any more Grand Slam titles to her record-breaking 23, Williams has proven her supermom status, been declared the AP Athlete of the Decade, and has a new title under her belt to start the new decade off strong.

Devastating bushfires have been spreading across Australia for months, and they show no signs of slowing down. Millions of acres have burned, destroying about 2,000 homes and killing at least 25 people.
