Sonko Rescue Team on STRIKE over payments

A group of youths working for Nairobi Senator Mike Sonko have gone on strike after the senator defaulted in paying them. The youths, mostly from Makongeni slums, claimed they’ve been working without pay for Sonko Rescue Team, a social services outfit being run by the senator.

But in a quick rejoinder, Senator Sonko has accused the ringleader of the group – one Mr. Swaleh – of indiscipline and working with his political opponents. This is the ‘public notice’ he issued:

PUBLIC NOTICE: SONKO RESCUE TEAM DOES NOT CONDONE ANY KIND OF INDISCIPLINE OR GROSS MIS-CONDUCT BY ITS MEMBERS.

On 11th April 2015, outside Nakumatt Mega Stadium Former Sonko Rescue Team Chairman Mathias Owino Ogweno alias Swaleh hit and damaged a car belonging to Mercy Murugi and instead of him accepting his mistake and being apologetic as one would expect in such a scenario, he turned abusive against Lady Mercy and even went ahead to threaten her.

Later in the day, Mercy tweeted the issue to her followers via @mercymurugi and that’s how I came to know of the unfortunate incident. I personally called Mercy and apologized and even repaired Mercy’s car. I assured her of her safety amidst the threats Swaleh had issued against her.

I do not and will never condone any case of indiscipline by any SRT Member especially those approached by my political enemies to tarnish my name by provoking members of the public and breaking the law using my name. I’m not above the law and our mandate as Sonko Rescue Team is to serve Wananchi without prejudice. It has come to our knowledge that Swaleh is now being financed by My Political Opponents to try and tarnish the image of Sonko Rescue Team.

It honestly pains me to see a number of youths engaging in crime due to unfavourable circumstances they face everyday and as a Parent and a Leader, I have taken it upon myself to positively change as many of their lives as possible.

I assure the Public that SRT will still continue to positively serve them regardless of the hurdles being put on it’s way by Selfish Individuals. I also encourage all Members of the Public to report any indiscipline cases they might come across by any Sonko Rescue Team Member.
