You’re typing a message on Twitter and see your character limit dwindling. Before you know it you’ve sent two messages and haven’t even reached the end of your story. We all hate this well that’s why….

The social media company’s product manager Sachin Agarwal revealed the change on Twitter’s developers’ blog

The DM revision will be tested in the coming weeks before being widely deployed next month.

The alteration removes the need to send multiple private messages in one conversation.

“I assume Twitter has done analysis of users and found this is a source of frustration,” said Michael Mulvey, assistant professor of marketing at the University of Ottawa’s Telfer School of Management. Mulvey continued: “Or, perhaps it’s an opportunity to stop users substituting Twitter for other platforms like Google or Facebook.

Agarwal said the 140 character limit on Tweets will remain in place, retaining the key unique feature of the platform.

“It grates against the core aspect of their brand identity,” said Mulvey. “Twitter has always been about succinct messages. It’s losing a unique quality but I don’t think it will arouse much of a backlash.

Twitter head of news and government partnerships Steve Ladurantaye said the move is, “just to make Twitter even more awesome”
