Manchester United signed Fernandes in January with fans expecting him to be the answer to their attacking woes.
The Portugal international had hit 32 goals from the No 10 role for Sporting Lisbon last season, more than any other midfielder in world football
Against Wolves, in the player’s debut, he started the game playing in the No 10 role where he flourished for Sporting.
But, in both that match and Monday’s 2-0 win over Chelsea, his position was changed as the game went on.
That suggests that United don’t quite know where he fits in – and where he can be at his devastating best.
Fernandes had been prominent but dropped off and the Norwegian believed his new recruit could flourish in a deeper role.
Against Chelsea on Monday, United tried Fernandes in the hole.
It worked, too, with the Portugal international influencing the match at Stamford Bridge and bagging an assist.
But, as the game went on, the Red Devils again tinkered with his position.
And, while United got the result, their continual changing of Fernandes’ role suggests they have a problem.
Louis van Gaal never knew if Angel Di Maria was a winger or midfielder, while Jose Mourinho couldn’t crack the Alexis Sanchez code despite trying him in all four attacking positions.
And United need to settle on a place for Fernandes so they can get their money’s worth in the long run.
