9 people have died in a grisly road accident involving a trailer and a matatu in Gilgil, along the Nairobi-Nakuru highway. The accident occurred near St. Mary’s Hospital in Gilgil.
Eight people are said to have died on the spot while one succumbed while being rushed to hospital.
Two people survived the crash and were rushed to hospital where they are receiving treatment.
Gilgil Sub-County Commander John Onditi confirmed the incident stating that the Friday morning crash left a number of passengers injured.
He stated that police are in the area facilitating the clearing of the wreckage.
According to a witness, there were bodies all over the road while members of the public rushed to rescue those who were still trapped inside the wreck.
“The matatu has been reduced to a shell and bodies are lying all over,” the witness stated.
According to an analysis by NTSA in 2020 November, most accidents are caused by human-related factors such as speeding, reckless driving, dangerous overtaking, drunk driving, drunk walking, among others.
