Kenyans have been notified of the new electricity cost per kilowatt. The cost of electricity is bound to rise after the shilling got weaker against the dollar. This will see the cost of electricity doubling from sh0.57 per kW to sh1.07 per kW.

“Notice is given that all prices for electrical energy… will be liable to a foreign exchange fluctuation adjustment of plus 107.31 cents per kWh for all metre readings taken in October 2020,” said the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (Epra) Notice.

This is the new highest amount people will have to pay for electricity since 2018 when the cost had risen up to sh1.22 per kW of electricity.

The forex component is among the key determinants of power prices with the others being fuel cost charge (FCC), inflation adjustment, water charge, value added tax, among other levies. The shilling hit a new lower of sh108.6 to a dollar when at the beginning of June it had been at shs101.16 against the dollar.
