A Number of county governments are reported to have began preparation for mass COVID-19 related deaths due to the surging cases.

In a report by the Daily Nation, Nairobi County and the national government are developing specification for special body bags to be bought in bulk.

The Kenya Medical Suppies Agency (KEMSA) chief executive Jonah Manjari said the Agency is waiting for the Health Ministry to approve the purchase.

It further showed Kakamega, Siaya and Kisii county had already spotted large fields to hold possible grave yards.

According to Lenai Kamario, County government of Laikipia has also reported to have adequate land set aside for the activity and are now focusing on buying the body bags.

“All that had been catered for in the Laikipia COVID-19 Contigency Plan. There is no shortage of space. Body bags are also available,” Said Kamario.

However the County Government of Nyeri has remained optimistic with governor Mutahi Kahiga stating no plans to buy land.

“We choose to remain positive and optimistic that we will not have mass deaths,” he said.

Mombasa county government also said it had enough land for the activity in case there was a spike in the number of deaths.

Kisumu County said it was putting more effort in containing the virus and up-scaling surveillance at its borders.

“We have not yet arrived at the point of preparing a disgnated mass graves,” said Aloice Ager. “That will have to be discussed  at length with the multi-agency committee on the way foward,” she added.
