Court Gives DP William Ruto Back His Powers

Months ago,President Uhuru Kenyatta made subtle changes within the structure of government including the name of his office from The Presidency to Executive Office of the President.

Executive Order No.1 of 2020 caused a commotion as some interpreted that as a downgrade to the Dp.

“This innocent looking nomenclature change has huge legal implications…president denotes singularity of power…The presidency is shared power ,” City lawyer Donald Kipkorir tweeted.

The Deputy president therefore would not get any portfolio and had to wait to be assigned duties. He had lost his glamour as he could not appoint his staff even.

This brought a lot of differences in opinions leading to activists and LSK to take President Uhuru to court.

On Monday 3 August the High Court suspended the implementation of the President’s Executive Order. High court Judge, JUstice James Makau stated the president invoked his powers wrongly to restructure independent constitutional offices.

He said such implementations would have lead to a direct contravention of constitutional principles and values on judicial independence, transparency, accountability and the rule of law.
