2016 Miss Langata Women’s Prison Ruth Kamande Wanjiku’s death sentence appeal has been upheld by the Court of Appeal.

The announcement was made by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) under Noordin Haji on Friday, November 6.

Ruth Kamande was accused of fatally stabbing her boyfriend 22 times in Buruburu estate in September 2015.

High Court Judge Jessie Lessit sentenced Kamande to death in 2017, saying that the prosecution had proven beyond reasonable doubt that the accused had committed the crime.

While making the ruling, Judge Lessit argued that it was important for young people to understand that killing a boyfriend or girlfriend is not a good thing and does not make one appear to be ‘cool.’

Kamande had appealed against Lessit’s ruling and has been following proceedings of the case for three years while in prison.

ODPP commended the court for making the ruling to sentence Kamande to death, stating that justice was served.
