Kenyan MPs will refund more than Ksh1.2 billion they unlawfully awarded themselves as house allowances following a ruling on Thursday, 10 December.

Judges Weldon Korir, Pauline Nyamweya and John Mativo ordered the Parliamentary Service Commission (PSC) to deduct the salaries of the legislators within 12 months.

The case emerged from a clash between the PSC and the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC).

Attorney General Paul Kihara previously told the court that the house allowances were paid to the members of Parliament without the consent of the SRC.

The MPs got Ksh250,000 in house allowances monthly. Kihara told the court that the money translated to Ksh104 million every month.

The Attorney General, SRC, Law Society of Kenya (LSK), and activist Okiya Omtatah went to court to push PSC to deduct the money paid and return the same to the Treasury.
