Former NCIC Commissioner Alice Wairimu Nderitu Appointed To The United Nations As Special Adviser

Ex Commissioner of the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) Alice Wairimu Nderitu was appointed to the United Nations as Special Advisor on the Prevention of Genocide on Tuesday, 10 November.

Nderitu takes over from Senegal’s Adama Dieng and Navamanee Ratna (Pramila) Patten, Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Sexual Abuse in Dispute, who has been working as acting Special Advisor on the Prevention of Genocide.

Alice Nderitu worked at the NCIC from 2009 to 2013 and was one of three mediators of a peace agreement signed by 10 ethnic groups in Nakuru, Kenya.

The announcement was made by UN Secretary-General AntĂłnio Guterres, who praised Nderitu for her role in peace building and conflict prevention, as a mediator and senior advisor in the reconciliation process amongst communities in Kenya and other African countries.

She is currently a member of the Kenya National Committee on the Prevention and Prosecution of Crimes Against Humanity, Crimes of Genocide, War Crimes and Other Types of Discrimination, the African Union Network of African Women in Conflict Prevention and Resolution (Fem-Wise) and the Women Waging Peace Network.
