Former Tanzanian President Benjamin Mkapa is dead. He died earlier on Friday 24 July at Muhimbili National Hospital in Dar es Salaam. He died at the age of 81 years.
The news was announced by current president, John Magufuli;
Kwa masikitiko makubwa tumepata msiba mkubwa, mzee wetu Benjamin William Mkapa, Rais Mstaafu wa Awamu ya Tatu amefariki dunia, amefariki dunia katika hospitali jiJini Dar es Salaam ambako alikua amelazwa, Naomba watanzania tulipokee hili, tumepata msiba mkubwa na tuendelee kumuombea Mzee wetu Rais Mstaafu Benjamin William Mkapa ambaye amentangulia mbele za haki, taarifa zingine zitaendelea kutolewa lakini Mzee Mkapa hatunaye tena,” said President Magufuli.
The late Benjamin Mkapa was the Tanzanian President from 1995-2005 when his presidential term ended.
He won the elections in Tanzania, as a candidate for the state revolutionary party Chama Cha Mapinduzi in November 1995. He was also the chairman of Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM).
