IEBC Declares University Of Nairobi Student As The Youngest Political Aspirant

On Tuesday, 15 December 2020, Kelvin Mwangi Maina, a first-year student at the University of Nairobi, made history by becoming Kenya’s youngest political candidate in a by-elections.

The 20-year-old Bachelor of Commerce student contested for the vacant MCA seat in Gaturi Ward, Kiharu. The seat was declared vacant after MCA Cyrus Kiiru Mbembe passed away.

Maina was issued with a clearance certificate to run for the by-elections on 16 October 2020, after which the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) officially declared him the youngest candidate.

“At 20, Kelvin Mwangi Maina of Party of Economic Democracy (PED) is the youngest candidate to be cleared for December 15 By-election,” read a statement by the IEBC.

The UON student received appreciation for his efforts from Ndindi Nyoro, Member of Parliament for the county, for his incredible efforts and his ambition to lead the region.

“To Kelvin Mwangi Maina, you are a great young man. Vying while in your first year on campus proves you have a great future ahead,” Ndindi Nyoro stated.
