A report emerging from the controller of budget shows misappropriation of COVID-19 funds allocated to counties to boost the fight against Corona virus pandemic.

Some counties were found to have spent the funds on expenses not related to COVID-19 such as buying gumboots , TV sets, paying water and electricity bills.

In Elgweyo Marakwet, Governor Alex Tolgos’ administration was spotted to have used sh 240,000 to buy 40 inch screens while Mandera county drained sh 3.7 million to gumboots with it’s purpose not explained.

Mandera county went ahead and allocated sh 354,000 for TV sets, sh 260,000 for gas cooker (four burner) and sh 106,000 to buy gas cylinder (one gas at sh 60,000 and another 6kg at sh 56,000).

In Busia county, governor Sospeter Ojaamong allocated sh 15 million on paying water and electricity bills, buying 10 tonnes of chlorine and other water treatment chemicals.

In Kericho, governor Chepkwony’s administration poured sh 23 million on awareness and publicity of the Pandemic.

Some other counties even siphoned the funds without budget and other counties like Nairobi spent the money on nothing at all, the funds are intact.

Nakuru, Kiambu and Wajir recorded the highest expenditures of Sh 311m, sh 246m and sh 255m respectively.

Sad reality we are in!
