Kenya Airways will resume passenger flights on June 8, the Transport Ministry has confirmed.

majority of the airline’s 36 aircraft, including 9 Boeing 787 Dreamliners, 10 Boeing 737 aircraft, and 17 Embraers, have remained grounded since 25th March after the government suspended all international passenger flights, in a bid to curb the spread of coronavirus.

The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) has denied that it plans to resume passenger flight operations at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.

This comes a day after an internal memo by JKIA Airport Manager Abel Godo to officials from the Aeronautical Operational Control (AOC), all government agencies, concessionaires, contractors, suppliers and service providers about the imminent resumption of passenger flights for a meeting leaked

On the other hand, the Kenya Airports Authority is putting in place the necessary operation manual ahead of the opening of the country’s airports for passengers.

This week, staff at JKIA were taken through a two-day pandemic preparedness training, a program of the East African Community conducted by AMREF and funded by Germany.

Transport  Cabinet Secretary James Macharia said the airline is ready to take back to the skies.

This will however be subject to “medical protocol”, Macharia said, which the government is keen to ensure both the national carrier and KAA comply with.

“We expect KQ to fly from June 8 subject to medical protocols,” he said.
