Lupita Nyong’o and Danai  Gurira’s  planned adaptation of the Novel “Americanah “The movie is Based on Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s best-selling novel, “Americanah”. The story is about heading for America, where, despite academic success, one is forced to grapple for the first time with what it means to be black.

Lupita Nyong’o who is an Oscar award winner and actress from Kenya (or is she Mexican?) has been in Nigeria meeting Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie as a guest to the equally prized African writer.

Lupita Nyong’o is cast as Ifemelu, a young, beautiful, self-assured woman raised in Nigeria, who as a teenager falls in love with her classmate Obinze (Momoh).

She leaves for America to a new dawn of black identity. This promises to be an exciting movie on HBo and packed into a 10-episode series.

Americanah was published in 2013 and won its author, Adichie, the 2013 National Book Critics Circle Fiction award.

It tells the story of Ifemelu, a young Nigerian woman who immigrates to the United States to attend college. While in the U.S.

Ifemelu deals with leaving her high school love behind and contends with what it means to be black in the post 9/11 Western world.

All these films and the upcoming series are part of a similar pattern: That of the work of African origin actors, directors and/or producers with one foot in the West, winning opportunities and increased visibility in the West, while the other foot remains firmly placed on the continent where they draw their inspiration and stories from.

For too long Hollywood’s stories about Africa were dominated by tales of war, conflict and white savior-style morality tales and lessons from the West. It’s the marriage of two worlds and hopefully one where African stories get to be on the big screen.

Americanah has sparked a cultural phenomenon and is revered by fans around the world,” said Sarah Aubrey, head of original content for HBO Max.

“It has affected me deeply as one of the most moving, socially relevant and romantic stories of our time. With exceptional talent like Lupita and Danai in front of and behind the camera, this series will give viewers a uniquely heartfelt and unforgettable experience.”

The series marks a reunion for Nyong’o and Gurira, who starred together in the blockbuster Marvel film “Black Panther.
