Stolen police car in meru riot

Meru National Polytechnic students went on a rampage during a riot.  While the students were on the street demonstrating some of them stole a police car and drove it along the street.

The genesis of this fiasco was brought about by insecurity in the area and the gruesome killing of a student from Meru National polytechnic.

The students looted shops as they protested the killing of one of there own in the town.

The students barricaded the Meru-Nanyuki and Meru-Maua roads with stones glazing fire before burning down shops where the body was found.

Police were subdued as the students looted shops and attacked motorists, incapacitating business at the busy Makutano shopping center.

Meru National Polytechnic students’ union deputy president Kimani Wachira said their colleague was robbed before he was killed.

Mr. Wachira said they have reported several cases of muggings and insecurity in the area and accused police of quiescence.

The student was walking to school for examinations when he was killed. We are now demanding the CCTV footage from a nearby hotel to identify the attackers,”.Mr. Wachira said.

The student leader said the aggressors normally attack and then hide in the shops which were set on fire.

According to former students president, Jackson Kirimi, they had earlier resolved the problem by talking to the community.

“Before I left college last year, we had managed to contain the insecurity by working with locals. Students were being robbed and attacked at a particular spot in Makutano.

Almost 30 people were arrested during the riots with police officers, backed by residents, engaging the students in running battles.
